Support for sensory room

-

A Washington primary school has been helped to support its sensory room thanks to a kind donation.

Rotary Washington has donated £1,000 to Biddick Primary School to help with its ‘Sensory Rocket Room’, which has been in use since April. The room is open to all, but is mainly used by children with sensory needs such as autism, anxiety, anger issues and those with attachment obstacles.

Special educational needs co-ordinator Carling Baggott said: “The room provides a quiet space for children with sensory needs to work as they can struggle with daily classroom demands.”

“It gives the children an opportunity to be on their own, but also a chance to join the mainstream classes.”

Staff at the school have been specially trained to supervise and support those using the room, which is open to all year groups.

The room is used first thing in the morning and after lunchtime to calm children down before returning to the classroom, and help those suffering with anxiety.

It is hoped to use the money to further equip the room with suitable de-stimulation furniture. Washington and Sunderland West MP Sharon Hodgson also attended the cheque presentation.
