STORY: Rubbish collection is one of the most basic services provided by local councils – but not all household waste removal is covered by the cost of council tax

Billy Potts: I’m currently living in North London. The local council provide a dump where all bulky items and all rubbish can be dumped free of charge as long as you get it there yourself. You can even book a van load in but you have to bring a current council tax bill. This saves the council on collection and everything goes in the correct skip so recycling is easier and more cost effective.

Pauline Johnson: Not so good when I am having to pay £20 for one item to be collected.

Robert Spence: Always said as soon as you needed a permit to take waste to the tip in a van there would be more fly-tipping. Better to let everyone take it there in one place and it saves on clean ups.

Chris Parry: The Professor talks sense, but hey what would he know and why would the council take any notice. It seems to me that bulky waste charges are a bit of a false economy. The cost of clearing flytipping is much higher than the charge to collect.
