Honour a health hero like Dave

-

NHS stalwart Dave McNicholas knows how important the Sunderland Echo Best of Health awards are in raising health workers’ morale.

The long-serving ICCU manager at City Hospitals Sunderland was one of two winners of last year’s Long Term Achievement category in the awards run by the Echo and its sister paper, the Shields Gazette.

And today Dave reflects on his honour and last year’s ceremony.

He said: “It was a bit of a surprise but a very welcome one.

“But to be honest, what I remember most about it is what happened after the night.

“I remember the number of people who stopped me in the corridor of the hospital and congratulated me. There were people saying ‘well done, well deserved’ and that was really nice.”

Dave added that the award was for not just himself but his whole section and also how important it is to put people forward for an nomination.

“Even for those who don’t get to win, the fact that someone sees fit to nominate you is very pleasing, “he said.

“And if you do win, it is really nice that people stop you and say ‘well done’ even if they don’t know you.”

Nominations for our Best of Health awards are now open and there’s a wide-ranging number of categories.

NHS workers have such an important role in the community that they serve, and it is only right that their dedication and hard work should be put in the spotlight.

So if you have a health hero, don’t hesitate in putting them forward for an award.

Full details of how to nominate are on Pages 8 & 9 tonight.
