Paul added: “I just saw the bouncers running down the street and get hold of a lad.

“Then I heard people saying somebody had been stabbed so I walked down the back lane and saw someone lying on the floor with ambulance staff next to him.”

Police said Connor’s family are being supported by specialist officers at this difficult time.

One message, left with flowers near the scene, read: “Going to miss your smile so much. I have so many good memories of us together. You are loved so much by all your friends + family.”

Another read: “Still cannot believe this has happened. You were an amazing lad with such a contagious smile and always full of mischief.

“Work won’t be the same without you. We will never forget you.”

An increased police presence remained in the area yesterday, with parts of the city centre sealed off as officers carried out their inquiries.

A Craft Union spokespers­on said: “We are aware of an incident that took place in the vicinity of The Borough pub after it had closed and are assisting the police with their ongoing enquiries.

“Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the teenager at this difficult time.”

Senior Investigat­ing Officer, Detective Chief Inspector, John Bent said: “One person remains in custody but we do need anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have informatio­n to get in touch with Northumbri­a Police.

“We would encourage anyone who say anything, was in the area at the time of the incident or thinks they saw anything suspicious, to get in touch via 101 quoting log 124 24/02/19 or Crimestopp­ers anonymousl­y on 0800 555 111.”
