Vale chief denies Heed speculation

-

Port Vale chairman Norman Smurthwaite has denied speculation that he has expressed an interest in buying Gateshead.

A number of names have been linked with a takeover of the National League play-off challengers since they were put up for sale by owner Dr Ranjan Varghese just under two weeks ago.

Speaking to the Stoke Sentinel, Smurthwaite confirmed that the only contact he has had with Gateshead was to sign Luke Hannant in January 2018, and to discuss another possible deal for a player recommended by former Heed and Vale boss Neil Aspin.

He said: “There’s no approach.

“The only interest was with Luke Hannant, the manager (Neil Aspin), and a player that Neil wanted at the end of the season had he still been with us.”

Gateshead have confirmed that the Vale chairman “has not registered an interest in buying the club.”

Smurthwaite’s name has been mentioned as a possible buyer over the weekend, but it is believed that National League and Football League rules would prevent him from becoming owner of Gateshead whilst he is still chairman of the League Two Valiants.

Several parties at home and abroad have shown an interest in buying Gateshead since they were officially put up for sale.

Meanwhile, Gateshead supporters are set to officially launch the Gateshead FC Soul Supporters Association on Thursday night at Pelaw Social Club.
