SINGH LEADS SUNDERLAND TO WINNING NEPL DRAW

Sunderland are sixth in the Dukes ECB NEPL First Division following a winning draw at South Shields.

The Ashbrooke outfit amassed 254-3 with Daniel Shurben making 78 from 88 balls, which included 12 fours and a six.

Ramanpreet Singh then scored an excellent 114 not out from 144 balls, including 12 fours and a six, while Michael Cooney added 37.

Shields then put on 75 runs for the second wicket, as Luke Elliott scored 47 and Anthony Collova added 38.

They then dug in for the draw, ending on 135-6, despite the best efforts of Zaheer Shahbaz (2-26) and Mark Turner (2-21).

Boldon are one place and three points behind Sunderland following their home defeat to Crook.

The visitors made a good score of 215-8 thanks to 63 runs from opener Abhiram Joshi, which included seven fours from 129 balls.

Daniel Doram added a breezy 54 runs from 59 balls, including four fours and two sixes, while the star with the ball was Asif Ali, who returned 4-70. The home side then lost wickets regularly throughout their innings, and were eventually all out for just 104, with opener Gary Scott top scoring with 19.

Steven Chapman claimed 3-6 and Doram with the ball returned 4-20, in a fairly onesided match.

The games between Washington and Shotley Bridge, Blaydon and Ashington and Gateshead Fell and Willington were all abandoned, without a ball being bowled due to the weather.

Castle Eden had no game this weekend.

In the Premier Division, Whitburn struggled away at Eppleton, as the home side inserted them to bat.

Dean Musther was in excellent form with the ball, taking 6-36 in his spell, while there were two wickets apiece for Xavier Owen and Connor Whitelock.

Opener James Thompson made 44 runs with the bat as Whitburn ended on 139 all out.

After a couple of early losses, Eppleton batted well as Sam Dinning struck 54 not out from 128 balls and Tyler Watson then hit 40 not out from 79 balls, putting on 93 for the third wicket to get their side home on 142-3, and win the game by seven wickets.

Hetton Lyons racked up the runs, scoring 280-3 declared, as they hosted Newcastle.

Both openers made centuries, with Stuart Walker scoring 108 from 161 balls, including 11 fours and a six, while his colleague Karl Turner fired 101 runs from 135 balls, which featured nine fours and two sixes, as they put on 224 runs for the first wicket.

Newcastle were immediatel­y on the ropes in their innings, as openers Steven Allen and Ross Greenwell departed without scoring.

They were then reduced to 31-7, as man-of-the-match Turner claimed 5-42 with the ball and Robert Talbot returned 4-23 to bowl the visitors all out for 127 and win by a massive 153 runs.

Burnmoor travelled to the champions South North, won the toss, and asked the home side to bat first.

They declared on 2036, with contributi­ons from opener Chris Hewson, who made 51, John Graham, who scored 57, and Jacques Du Toit, who added 42, while Martin Hubber returned 3-39 with the ball.

The visitors then batted out for the draw, as both Allan Worthy and Paul Craig made 27 runs apiece, and despite two wickets each for Ollie McGee and Michael Craigs.

The champions have regained top spot, despite the draw. All other games fell victim to the weather.
