Schools honoured for international learning
Schools that go the extra mile to encourage pupils to be global citizens with respect for different cultures have been celebrated.
Twelve schools from across County Durham were honoured at Durham Town Hall as part of the International School Awards.
And among them is Acre Rigg Academy, Peterlee.
The Peterlee pupils were honoured in The British Council scheme that recognises schools that have demonstrated their commitment to raising awareness of other countries, traditions and languages.
At the ceremony, organised by Durham County Council, attendees heard how schools host pupil exchanges with countries all over the world, including Spain, Finland, France, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.
Many also have partner schools in countries such as
Kenya and Sri Lanka and collaborate on projects focusing on a range of issues.
Pupils also enjoy regular chats on Skype, while teachers have taken part in exchanges to learn about different teaching methods.
Brian Stobie, international officer at the county council, said: “It’s wonderful to see how committed County Durham schools are to achieving this and to providing opportunities for children to forge international friendships.”
Among the other schools honoured at the ceremony were: St Hild’s College Church of England Aided Primary School, Durham; Pelton Community Primary School, Chester-le-Street; St Benet’s Roman Catholic Voluntary Aided Primary School, Chester-le-Street; Durham Johnston Comprehensive School, Durham and Lumley Infant and Nursery School, Chesterle-Street.
