Sunderland still in the mix for Harrier League crown

-

The Northern Cross Country Championships will be held at Aykley Heads in 2021.

The Brampton to Carlisle 10 Mile Road Race organised by Border Harriers & Athletic Club is the oldest 10-mile road race in the United Kingdom and is held in November.

The first race was completed in 1952.

There have been many variations to the course over the years and it was taken that Sunderland Harrier Brian Rushworth held the course record from 1993 of 47.37, but this was beaten by Liverpool Harrier Charlie Hulson, with his winning time of 47.24 on November 17.

Houghton Harriers had a number of runners competing in the Liverpool Cross Challenge and European Trials with some impressive results.

Will Bellamy, the 2018 Under-17 England Athletics 1500m champion, who missed most of the summer through injury, finished an impressive ninth in 18.46.

His clubmate Henry Johnson, the Under-17 England Athletics 1500m indoor champion, who is more at home on the track, was 26th (19.12) and Luke Pickering was 60th.

The race won by Louis Small of Ashford (18.26). Middlesbrough’s Archie Lowe was fourth.

Houghton’s Cameron Allan also ran to form to finish 37th in the senior men’s race (32.39) and 14th in the Under-23 category.

He was only 42 seconds behind the North East’s top cross country runner Morpeth’s Carl Avery in 22nd (31.57).

Former Houghton Harrier Alex Brown was 52nd (32.57). Houghton’s Lee Dover was 143rd

Joshua Blevins (NSP) was third in the Under-15 Boys’ and Wallsend’s Sam Charlton, easing himself back to fitness following injury, after winning all the Under-20 Junior Championships last year, finished 16th in his category.

Shildon’s Kate Avery clinched her place in the women’s team for the European Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, by finishing third (28.30) in the women’s race won by Blackburn’s Jess Judd (28.22)

Sunderland Strollers were out in force at the Run Northumberland Big 10m at Ponteland.

They had Andrew Forbes in sixth (60.10), Luke McCormack ninth (62.15), Dan Anderson 17th (64.52), Ritchie Gerry 22nd and first Over-55 (66.04) and Wendy Chapman 23rd and first Over-50 (66.30).
