Health chiefs urge people to get flu jab
Health chiefs is urging people to get their flu jab this winter, especially those at higher risk who are eligible for a free vaccination through their local GP practice.
South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust say vaccination is the best defence against flu.
Certain groups of people are at higher risk from flu, including adults aged 65 and over, those with underlying health conditions, pregnant women, and frontline health and social care workers.
The free flu vaccination is being offered to:
*Those aged 65 years and over
*Those aged 6 months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups *Pregnant women *Those living in a residential or nursing home
Dr Shaz Wahid, Medical Director of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Flu is now circulating and the flu vaccine remains the best defence we have against it and protects those people who are most vulnerable.
“Our own staff flu immunisation campaign is always an important part of our preparation for winter. By protecting themselves, staff are protecting their vulnerable patients, their colleagues and their own families from the virus and staying healthy so they can continue to play their part in delivering services and ensure that our patients receive the best possible care.
“Flu is highly infectious and spreads easily from person to person. It can be particularly dangerous for patients who are already in hospital and other care settings.
“We’re calling on all those eligible for the free vaccine staff, patients and those in atrisk groups - to get protected.”
