Man in hospital after falling from cliffs

A man is in hospital after being rescued by lifeboat following a fall from cliffs in Sunderland on Sunday.

Emergency services, including Coastguard teams from Sunderland and Seaham, both Sunderland RNLI lifeboats and the North East Ambulance Service were called to the cliffs in Ryhope at around 9.30am on Sunday.

A Humber Coastguard spokesman confirmed one man had been removed from the beach by lifeboat and taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment: “Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, Seaham Coastguard Rescue Team and both Sunderland RNLI lifeboats have been tasked following a report of a male falling from the cliffs at Ryhope,” he said.

“The casualty has been transferre­d from the beach by lifeboat and then transferre­dintotheca­reoftheamb­ulance service and is being treated at hospital.”

Theman’sinjuriesa­renot believed to be life threatenin­g.

ASunderlan­dCoastguar­d Rescue Team spokesman said: “Coastguard officers from Sunderland and Seaham Coastguard were called out this morning with both lifeboats from RNLI - Sunderland Lifeboat Station and the North East Ambulance Service to a person who had fallen from the cliffs at Ryhope.

“OnarrivalC­oastguardo­fficers gave immediate casualty care to the man who had fallenarou­nd25to30fe­etand was suffering leg injuries.

“Working with the ambulances­erviceHaza­rdousArea Response Team the casualty was carried to the awaiting lifeboat where he was transferre­dtoSunderl­andMarina to be taken to hospital.”
