Megan lives life in the fast lane with sport, college and work
A Sunderland student is living life in the fast lane as she prepares for the British Athletics Indoor Champions.
Megan Costello, 17, is managing to combine a college education, a part time job and driving lessons with training sessions six times a week.
Proud dad Adam Barkley said: “We are so proud of her achievements but also the maturity that she shows in her dedication and commitment to her training.
“She has resisted the usual teenage distractions and remains 100% focused on her athletics.
“Megan has faced injury setbacks in the past but she has never let this or the fact she’s one of the smallest competitors in her age group demoralise her and she always manages to rise to the challenge.
“The whole family goes to watch her compete and we are all tremendously proud.”
Megan is competing in the Under 20 category of the 60 metres event for the British Athletics Indoor Championships.
The event, in Glasgow, will take place on Saturday, February 22, and Sunday, February 23, and is to be broadcast live on the BBC.
Megan currently trains with Gateshead Harriers and her team manager was full of praise for her recent development.
Janice Kauffman said: “Year on year Megan has progressed and continues to improve. As well as winning medals at major championships at 60m, 100m and 200m, she is a member of our club record-breaking 4 x 100m relay team and works well with the squad on improving both as individuals and as a team member.
“Megan has demonstrated that she has the capability and focus to perform at a high level.”
Although 2020 is less than a month old, the former Dyke House pupil has already tasted success after she smashed her personal best at the Northern Indoor championships to record a time of 7.74seconds.
This resulted in her invitation to take part in the 60 metres at the British Athletics Indoor Championships.
Her coach Geoff Fenwick said: “As Megan enters her development year in the U20 age group, with her current form, progression and expected improvement, competing at both the indoor and outdoor British Championships is a real possibility.”
