Josh fully committed to the Black Cats cause

Josh Scowen says Sunderland fans can expect to watch a committed midfielder when he makes his Black Cats bow, and believes he will slot into the current system perfectly.

The midfielder made the move from QPR on Monday night, becoming Sunderland’s third signing of the January window for an undisclosed fee.

It brings to an end Sunderland’s search for a midfielder, with Phil Parkinson eager to ensure he had adequate quality and competition following the departure of Dylan McGeouch.

Scowen made over 100 appearances for QPR, and was also part of a Barnsley side that enjoyed a remarkable promotion from League One in the 2015/16 season, rising from the relegation places at christmas to a play-off win.

He joked that fans can expect to see a tenacious style.

He told safc.com: “I like to kick people! I don't mind leaving a few on.

“I'm comfortable on the ball, I like to try and play, I'm not going to be someone finishing off the move but I'll try and get it started.

“I'll put a few tackles in and get about the pitch.”

Despite making plenty of appearances this season, regular starts were hard to come by, and so the midfielder says this is the perfect opportunity to prove himself.

“I wasn't playing much really,” he said. “I want to be playing football.

“Sunderland have given me that opportunity, to resurrect my career is a bit strong, but they've given me that opportunity to start playing again and that's what I want to be doing.

“No one wants to be sitting there doing nothing. As long as I can please the gaffer, hopefully he'll pick me and I can play a lot of games.”

Parkinson has made a number of enquiries about midfielders this month, but was eager to make sure he had the right fit for his style and system.

It’s something he discussed with Scowen, who says it will suit him.

“We're playing a 3-4-3 now and sees me as one of the two,” he said.

“That suits me down to the ground really. I've seen the results recently, so hopefully I can impress him in training and get my first start as soon as possible.”
