Man fighting for life after ‘violent’ attack
An unconscious man was found in a Sunderland street by the emergency services after a serious assault.
Police officers attended Claxheugh Road, Sunderland, at around 4.30pm on Wednesday following reports of an attack in the street.
Northumbria Police confirmed on Thursday that a man is fighting for his life in hospital.
A 29-year-old man suffered serious head injuries in the assault and remains in a critical condition.
Police have arrested a 28- year-old man on suspicion of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. He remains in custody and is assisting officers with their inquiries, while a 25- year-old man is also being spoken to in connection with the incident.
Detective Sergeant Andy Richardson, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a very serious assault that has left a man fighting for his life in hospital.
“His family have been notified and are being supported by officers at this time.
“For reasons still to be established, the victim has been violently attacked in the street and was found unconscious after suffering significant head injuries.
“We are committed to establishing the circumstances behind the assault and ensuring those responsible are brought to justice. “We believe all parties are known to each other and this was an isolated incident.”
Additional patrols will take place in the area.
