what we champion and celebrate today.

Marie said: “In our fastpaced lives, it can be hard to stop and appreciate all the great things about the places we live. Celebrations bring people together, make us feel a part of something bigger, and give us a real sense of community.

“In this new book I hope to reveal the people, places, achievements, and events that made and make Sunderland, but we need your help.”

Marie is asking what memories you have of ship launches, street parties and the myriad of community events that mark our lives? Perhaps you can recall the humble beginnings of Sunderland

International Airshow as Sunderland Airport’s annual Air Days or that momentous day in 1973 (or even 1937) when Sunderland won the cup.

Hidden in lofts, garages and at the back of drawers are photograph albums and souvenirs relating to all the important events in the life of Sunderland and Marie is encouraging people to go along to Sunderland Local History Library at the newly relaunched Elephant Tea Rooms, to share their thoughts, memories and memorabilia.

Marie is holding two workshops so that celebratory recollections can be shared and items photographed for possible inclusion in her new book.

Coun John Kelly, Communities and Culture Portfolio Holder – Sunderland City Council, said: “Breathing new life into the magnificent Elephant Tea Rooms has been a real joy and to base our local studies department there, and welcome everyone in, is the result of an enormous amount of hard work.

“What better way to mark this new beginning than by working with Marie to celebrate all that Sunderland has achieved.”
