McGeady Aiden the Addicks after joining on loan until end of season

-

Aiden McGeady has joined Charlton Athletic on loan for the rest of the season.

The deal was announced in the early hours of deadline day, McGeady having travelled to Charlton to complete his medical and sign terms on his loan move late on Thursday evening.

McGeady, who still has 18 months left on his Sunderland deal, has no future on Wearside under Phil Parkinson

after it was made clear he could leave the club in December.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer said: “Bringing in someone with his quality is going to add to the squad.

“Last season we played against them obviously on three occasions and he’s an exceptional player.

“He brings goals, he brings assists, he’s someone that can make something out of nothing. “He’s got experience, he’s played in Europe and for his country. We’re bringing in a very good, experienced player.

“Coming into the back end of the season, experience can be important. Darren Pratley showed that in the play-off games last season.”

Charlton’s director of football Steve Gallen said: “I’m pleased.

“He’s someone I’ve been following personally for years, watching him play for (Republic of ) Ireland and Celtic, in particular.

“We had a good look at him last year because we played against him a few times.

“We wanted to get someone attacking and someone exciting and I’m pleased we got Aiden.”

McGeady trained with his new Addicks teammates for the first time on Friday and could make his debut against Barnsley at The Valley this afternoon.

The 33-year-old has made 15 starts and been subbed on once in Sunderland’s first 30 games of the League One season but has not featured since the end of November, not making Phil Parkinson’s matchday 18 for the last nine league fixtures. He had been training with the club’s Under-23 squad.

McGeady lists Celtic, Spartak Moscow, Everton, Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End as former clubs.

He joined the Black Cats in July 2017 from Everton and has made 98 appearances – scoring 27 goals and providing 13 assists.
