Man threatened to kill police officer and his kids

-

While lying face down and in handcuffs at Southwick police station, Lund raised his foot and struck the officer on the shoulder.

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court heard the assault happened when the officer and a colleague went to loosen Lund’s restraints to make him more comfortable.

They had earlier taken him to hospital for treatment for facial injuries, caused by his father forcibly restraining him at the family home on Friday, December 27.

Handing Lund a 16-week jail term, suspended for 18 months, District Judge Natalie Wortley said: “This was a sustained incident, but the assault itself was not sustained.”

Prosecutor Clare Irving told the court: “The defendant is arrested for an incident between him and his father.

“He said several times that he will kill Pc Mudd. He said, ‘I’ll bite your nose off, I’ll burn your kids, I’ll kill your kids’.

“He kicks Pc Mudd’s shoulder.”

Jason Smith, defending, said of Lund, who has a personality disorder and mental health issues: “He’d been invited to the family home for the Christmas period.

“There was an altercation with his father, and he would say that his father got drunk.

“When police arrive, the description is of the father holding or forcefully holding Mr Lund and Mr Lund having significant facial injuries.

“He was in an agitated and aggressive mood because he suffers from psychosis. I accept and Robert will accept that his actions in the police station were unforgiveable and inappropriate.”

District Judge Wortley ordered Lund to complete a six-month alcohol treatment programme and 20 rehabilitation days with the Probation Service for his attack on Pc Mudd, which he admitted.

He pleaded not guilty to three other charges, including two of harassment, for which he will be tried at the same court on May 7.
