Attack victim left battered in robbery

This man could hold the key to helping police as they investigat­e a robbery which left the victim with face and head injuries.

Northumbri­a Police officers hope they can trace him after releasing a CCTV still as part of their inquiries into the early hours attack.

The man was captured on footage with blood on his face and a woollen hat with the words ‘Sleigh Whaaat’ printed across it, with the search on in the hope he can help inquiries.

At 2.15am on Sunday, January 12, police were called to the Esso garage in Heworth Road, Usworth, after a report that a man had been assaulted.

A force spokespers­on said: “It was then reported that the offender stole the victim’s mobile phone before making off.

“Officers attended and found the man with injuries to his face and head.

“An investigat­ion is ongoing into the incident, and as part of their inquiries, officers have now identified a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident. “He was believed to have been in the area at the time of the robbery and could have valuable informatio­n which would assist officers with their investigat­ion.” The station is close to Victoria Road Health Centre and a row of shops look onto the forecourt of Esso.

The man, or anyone who recognises him, is asked to call 101 quoting reference 98 120120.
