How did your school fare in GCSE tables?

-

New Key Stage 4 school performance tables for Sunderland have been published by the Department of Education.

Schools are judged against a measure called Progress 8 which shows how much progress pupils at each school made between the end of Key Stage 2 and the end of Key Stage 4, compared to pupils across England who got similar results at the end of Key Stage 2.

This is based on results in up to 8 qualifications, which include English, maths, 3 English Baccalaureate qualifications including sciences, computer science, history, geography and languages, and three other additional qualifications.

Flying the flag for Sunderland once again are Argyle House School and St Aidan’s Catholic Academy.

Against a national average of 43% of school pupils achieving a Grade 5 or above in English and maths, school across Sunderland had 37% of pupils make the grade.

St Aidan’s, with 60% of its pupils gaining the grade, has continued from last year’s exam success.

This is coupled with being awarded the nationally recognised prestigious “Quality Mark” status for English and maths.

Headteacher Mr Sanderson attributes the success of the school to what he calls, “habits of excellence” which both staff and students adhere to.

Elsewhere in the city, St Anthony’s had 58% of its pupils gain Grade 5 or above in English and maths, again continuing on from a strong showing last year.

St Robert of Newminster Roman Catholic School in Washington, and Christ College in Pennywell, also recorded scores above the national average, with 53% and 47% respectively.

Another school with a strong showing was Red House Academy. It had 43% of pupils achieve Grade 5 or above in English and maths, a marked improvement on last year.

After a recent Ofsted visit this year, inspectors judged the school to be good in all areas, having previously being rated inadequate.

Principal Hijab Zaheer said: “We are delighted that Ofsted now deem this a good school in all areas. The children are talented, articulate and very intelligent and we believe they can go on and achieve great things.”
