Police issue appeal after serious assault

The victim of a “very serious assault” in Sunderland was rushed to hospital after being robbed by a group of men - all for a pouch of tobacco.

Detectives are calling for information after the robbery,which took place in the city’s Rutland Street.

A man reported to officers that he was attacked by a group of men, who approached him from behind and demanded money.

He alleged that he walking down the street at around 1.20am on Friday, January 31, before being punched to the ground and kicked by two others.

The men made off with just a pouch of tobacco and fled the scene towards Pallion.

The 30-year-old victim suffered injuries to his ribs in the attack and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Northumbria Police detectives have now appealed for any witnesses to come forward as the investigation continues.

Detective Constable Gavin James said: “This was a very serious assault and we will take robust action against anybody found to have been involved. “This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and I am now appealing for anyone who witnessed the robbery, or who lives in the area and may have CCTV footage, to get in touch. Your information, however small, could be absolutely crucial in ensuring those responsible for this appalling attack are brought to justice.”
