New Co-op store plan would create 12 new jobs
Proposals for a new Co-op supermarket in Penshaw have been lodged with planners.
Earlier this month, plans were verified for the site of the vehicle repair, MOT and service centre, Miller’s Automotive, off Station Road.
With the business looking to relocate elsewhere in the city, the building could soon be demolished to make way for a new Co-op food store.
Under plans submitted to Sunderland City Council, the new build would offer an ATM, a 13-space car park and cycle provision.
If approved, it would replace the existing Co-op store on Coxgreen Road, one of several branches of the supermarket chain operating in the Sunderland area.
A planning statement reads: “The application proposals will therefore secure the comprehensive redevelopment of the site to provide a purpose-built, modern format replacement convenience food store for the Co-op.
“This will provide an enhanced local shopping facility for the local population offering a wide range of goods and services including fresh produce, frozen goods and off licence to meet the day-to-day needs of residents in the immediate locality.
“The store will also be served by dedicated off-street car parking and servicing areas, which represent a vast improvement on the current store.”
Applicants say that the store represents a “significant capital investment in the area” and would create 12 fulltime jobs. Proposed opening hours would be 6am-11pm for seven days a week.
