Sunderland go down a storm in convincing win

-

where a mini maul formed before going to ground.

From the following phase, Barrass took the ball on to crash over the try line giving Ryan a simple conversion kick.

Ryan benefited from slick handling, in the pack. Hours of relentless focus on core skills is producing great results with all players looking very comfortable with ball in hands.

Luke Victory released a deft pass to Ryan wide left inside his own 10 metre area. Ryan powered around Ashingtons scrambling defence then landed a well placed hand off to round the final defender before scoring and converting his own try taking Sunderland into a 24-0 lead.

Barrass was unlucky not to score minutes later. Marc Edmundson sent a chip deep into Ashington's 22. Barrass showed great pace to begin a position to start to dive to ground the ball, but had his pocket picked by Dean Edmundson, who nipped in to score.

Ashington pulled a score back on 37 minutes when they exploited a gap in Sunderland’s defensive line to score under the posts.

The final score of the half came from Marc Edmundson. Pete Harrison's sweet line-out ball was well taken by Kitching and Groark found Edmundson in space to them weave through Ashington's

backs to score.

The conversion from Ryan took the half time scores to 38-7.

Stephenson was sin binned again and in his absence Sunderland doubled their defensive efforts notable contributions from Ryan and Hanlon, who left imprints on their opposite numbers and sheer volume of tackles from Harrison, Marc Edmundson and Brad Wall was impressive.

Barrass showed great determination to grab his second try, having spun and twisted his way through many attempted tackles to make a final dive and stretch to ground the ball giving Ryan another straightforward conversion.

Barrass with another pick and go finished the game with a well earned hat-trick and the 50-7 victory helping to extend Sunderland’s healthy points difference.

Preparation now turns to beating Guisborough, who inflicted Sunderland's only defeat earlier in the season in a close game that Ashbrooke were winning at the point player coach Martin Watt had to leave the pitch having dislocated a shoulder in the act of scoring a try.

All junior and mini rugby was lost to Storm Clara, as Ashbrooke and surrounding pitches were waterlogged.
