Phil hoping to exploit Oxford defensivel

Phil Parkinson says his Sunderland side will study teams who have impressed against Oxford United recently – including local rivals Newcastle United.

The Black Cats head to the Kassam Stadium tomorrow in a game which could have a big bearing on the League One promotion race. And as the duo prepare to do battle for the third time this campaign, Parkinson admits he will be casting an eye back to the FA Cup tie between Newcastle and Oxford – which the Magpies won 3-2 after a replay.

It’s a game which the Sunderland boss feels showed both the best and worst of Karl Robinson’s side. “I think more or less in that game, it summed up Oxford,” said Parkinson.

“They’ve got some very good footballers, but at times they look vulnerable defensively and Newcastle exploited that.

“We’ve got to learn from teams who have done well against Oxford, and it’s important in every game to look at the areas where we’re think they’re week and also identify where they are strong.

“We need to make sure we’re switched on to that.”

Victory in Oxfordshire could help lift Parkinson’s side towards the top two, and the significance of the clash isn’t lost on him.

“Every three points is huge,” added the Sunderland boss.

“Is one three points bigger than the other? Like we said last week, if they are against a potential rival then of course you’re stopping them getting going again.

“It’s another crucial game and we’re ready. We’re looking forward to it.”
