Cracking down on illegal scrap dealers

-

Action has been taken to clampdown on illegal scrap dealers in Sunderland.

Sunderland City Council teamed up with Northumbria Police to stop vans suspected of moving waste without the required licences.

The checks came after several scrap and lead thefts in Hetton and Houghton, as well as continued fly-tipping across the city.

Four vans were stopped, with the drivers of three of the vehicles producing licences required to collect and transport scrap metal. Another driver was ordered to produce his licence, which has been done.

Gavin Bell, senior environmental enforcement officer for Sunderland City Council, said: "We are sending out a very clear message and reassure the public that we are being more proactive in making sure that people are operating within the law.

"This is something that will happen more regularly. Anyone carrying waste must be authorised by the Environment Agency to do so. Anyone without these licences could be prosecuted."

Council staff were joined by colleagues from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the Vehicle and Operators Services Agency (VOSA), and Customs and Excise, at Houghton Cut A690.

Stopped vans had to complete tests, including licence checks, and making sure the vehicle is road worthy.

Neighbourhood Inspector Nick Gjorven said: "We are happy to support this day of action and work with our key partners to improve the lives of the local community.

“We know this type of activity is a concern for residents and we will be on hand to take action if any criminal activity is identified."
