Gooch stunner scoops the League One ‘Goal of the Month’ prize

-

Lynden Gooch's stunning winner against MK Dons has won the Sky Bet League One ‘Goal of the Month’ competition.

Academy product Gooch has become a key player under Phil Parkinson and his sublime winner at Stadium MK has won the monthly gong.

With 79 minutes on the clock, Gooch produced a moment of magic, jinxing away from goal before arcing a finish into the top corner to spark jubilant scenes.

Gooch said: “It is an incredibly proud moment for me. It was a great goal and a big one for the team – it’s always nice to score a goal like that, but even better when it’s one that gets you three points.

“The goal only came about because I was trying to create something out of nothing, but fortunately it went in.

“Afterwards, it was just chaos with all the fans and the lads, but it was a great moment.”

Oxford United boss Karl Robinson, meanwhile, says the club will do “everything we possibly can” to make sure today’s game against Sunderland goes ahead, as Storm Dennis hits the country.

Sunderland, fresh from back-to-back wins over Ipswich

Town and Rochdale at the Stadium of Light, travelled down to Oxford yesterday ahead of the League One fixture.

A yellow weather warning is in place from 10am on Saturday as Storm Dennis takes hold across the country.

The forecast is for heavy rain and strong gusts of up to 50-miles-per-hour during the game at the Kassam Stadium.

Speaking ahead of the game, Oxford boss Robinson said they are planning for the fixture to go ahead as planned.

Robinson said: “Is there another hurricane on the way? I’m sure it will be quite a lively one.

“You will have a lot of games called off at the weekend, it’s inevitable.

“Once you start getting gusts of 50mph, football becomes unplayable, as well as the rain we believe is meant to drop on the Kassam on Saturday.

“We’re not looking at that as a reason not to play. We’re prepping to play.

“We’ll do everything we possibly can as a club to get the game against Sunderland on.”
