Firefighters spent all night tackling garage blaze

Firefighters spent all night battling a fire that broke out at a large garage in Silksworth.

Crews from North Moor and Tynemouth were called to a fire in a house’s garage at 8.30pm on Tuesday.

Firefighters remained at the scene yesterday morning after battling the fire throughout the night.

Witnesses reported seeing fire engines and police cars on Tunstall Village Green, in Silksworth.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed one crew remained at the scene dampening down.

A fire brigade spokesman said: “We were called at 8.30pm last night to a private garage in Tunstall Village Green, Silksworth.

“Initially we sent two appliances which was increased to three appliances and a cobra – a more powerful hose.

“At 9pm this was increased to four appliances.

“At 4.19am we went down to one appliance and remain at the scene dampening down.

“The cause of the fire is not known.”

One fire engine remained at the scene at about 8.30am and all crews left the scene at about 9am. The residents were not believed to have been at home during the blaze.

Speaking from the fire scene, Ian Robinson, watch manager at Farringdon Fire Station, confirmed that no one had been injured.

He said: “About five fire engines were here throughout the night at the height of the fire.

“The fire has been brought under control and the building is showing signs of structural collapse so we are monitoring the situation. No one has been injured.”
