Nissan calling for ‘orderly balanced Brexit’
Car giant Nissan has pledged its commitment to the thousands of workers employed by the firm in the UK – but has called on negotiators to deliver an “orderly balanced Brexit” to secure its future success.
The comments came following a press conference in Paris on Monday – at which Nissan’s European chairman Gianluca de Ficchy was reported to have spoken about the uncertainty surrounding a subsequent trade agreement with the European Union.
The UK left the EU on Friday, January 31 – more than three years after the landmark Brexit vote in June 2016.
Negotiations are ongoing over a future partnership between the two.
Since 2016, there has been much speculation about the future of the company’s Sunderland plant, which was officially opened in 1986 and employs thousands of workers across the region.
A Nissan spokeswoman said in a statement on Tuesday: “We continue to invest in our UK operations to serve European markets.
“With the new Nissan Juke recently launching and preparations now underway for the new Qashqai.
“However, we are among those companies with major investments in the UK who are still waiting for clarity on what the future trading relationship between the UK and the EU will look like.
“We want our UK team of more than 7,000 people to have the best possible chance of future success.
“Which is why we continue to urge the UK and EU negotiators to work collaboratively towards an orderly balanced Brexit, that will continue to encourage mutually beneficial trade.”
