The Durham County Liberty squad are still on course for a 13th Liberty title after they beat Cambridges­hire 111-82 in the semi-final played at Erewash.

The early exchanges were neck and neck with the overall score locked at 63-63.

Across the green, Durham mustered four winning rinks, the pick of them being the all Durham quartet of Liam Hall, Russell Bewick, Bryan Henderson ( jnr) and Gary Smith, who beat Ed Elmore 27-12.

There were also wins for Vinnie O’Neill (Hartlepool) +7, Davd Bolt (Shields) +4 and Phil Smithson (Shields) +5.

The only losses saw Paul Mosley (Hartlepool) go down by a couple and Shield’s Paul Hartley lost by nine.

The counties have met on four previous occasions in the final with Durham coming out on top in all four, the final takes place at Nottingham on March 21.

It has been a good week for the South Shields Vipers in the local stages of this season’s national competitio­ns.

In the triples Jaxon McKenna, Phil Smithson and Shaun McIntosh proved too strong in the area final of the triples for Hartlepool’s Carl Higgins squad, the Shields lads ran out 152 winners and now qualify for the latter stages later this month at Nottingham, in the last sixteen they will face St Neot’s under 25 England skip Jamie Barker.

There was more good news for the Vipers in the area final of the two bowl as Jonny Forcer was outstandin­g in a 21-14 win over Stanley’s Brett Arkley, in the last sixteen at Nottingham Forcer will tackle Kingsthorp­e’s junior internatio­nalist Connor Cinato.

In the over 60 pairs Stanley’s Ian Peacock booked an area final place after a cracking 17-15 win at Durham against Jimmy Hutchinson.

There was more Stanley success as Brian Harris beat Aycliffe’s Barry Attwood 2316 in the area final of the over 60 fours.

In the area final of the women’s two bowl Hartlepool’s England star Devon Cooper beat the Vipers Nina Riches 21-11 to book a place at Nottingham, in the last sixteen Cooper will face Barwell’s Barbara Lewis.
