Witherwack seal home success over Washington

-

In the sole game that went ahead in the Fourth Division, Witherwack FC played host to Washington The Bird and bagged a 2-1 win at Thompson Park after a hardfought encounter.

Man of the match Kyle Hourigan was in fine form, netting one in a very strong performance which arguably could have had a lot more goals in it.

The Bird had Spence fire home for them but it wasn’t enough to take anything from the game.

A very speedy recovery is wished to Michael Coates, who suffered a nasty injury during the game.

In the Fourth Division Subsiduary Cup an enthralling encounter between Washington North End and league newbies Oddies United finished 4-3 to North End, who progress to the next round of the competition.

Oddies took the lead in the cup contest and held onto a two-goal advantage until half-time, their goals coming courtesy of a McConville double and a strike from Ayre.

But Washington improved and scrambled their way back into the game in the second half and Scott, Lewis, Fergus and Brannen all hit the target for the victors.

Stella United moved into the next round after they beat The Doxy Lad 5-3 in what is described by first choice goalkeeper Michael Stephenson as a “comfortable victory” for his side.

United started brightly and took the lead with just a minute on the clock through a strike from Wood and continued to apply pressure in very windy and testing conditions.

Further goals then followed for the victors United as Cains, Turnbull and a superb double from Mitchinson put them in the driving seat.

The Doxy Lad didn’t give up hope in the cup clash and fired back and scored three with Eddy Wood hitting two of them.

Stella managed to hold out as the game opened up more in the final third of the match, United sealing the 5-3 victory and confirming their place in the next round of the competition as their hunt for silverware continues.
