Finalists are gearing up to hit the catwalk in a bid to be crowned Top Model of Sunderland.

The annual competition returns this spring, raising funds for the Foundation of Light, and budding models are hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous winner Georgia Mordey, 21, who went on to win the national title and is now due to compete at international level.

The Washington model, who works for Lookers car dealership in Newcastle Road, won the Top Model of Sunderland crown in 2018, which gained her entry into the Supermodel England final.

She came first runner-up that year, but judges were so impressed they invited her back last year where she won the top title, earning her a place in the Top Model of England international contest taking place later this year, where she’ll be representing her country.

Georgia said: “It’s been an amazing experience. I never expected to come first runner up, so to then go on and win and be representing England is incredible.

“Winning Top Model of Sunderland has opened so many doors for me, such as modelling for local boutiques, bridal shows and charity events. I was even asked to model in London Fashion Week, but I was an inch too small.”

Top Model of Sunderland director Ailish Shaw is running the final alongside the Top Model of Durham final at the Raddison Blu in Durham City on May 10.

Ten girls will compete in each competition, with a winner crowned for each of the regional titles.

Entries are still open for the event but, unlike other competitions, there’s no stipulation on entrants’ marital status or whether they’re mothers or not.

“Being a mum or having children shouldn’t stand in your way of competing and doing what you want to do,” she explained.

“Entrants can be any size, shape or height in Top Model, it’s very inclusive.”

Speaking about what she was looking for in contestants, she said: “It’s about more than wearing a dress on the catwalk, I’m looking for someone who can represent the brand and who wants to help local charities.”

Entries for the final on May 10 are still open and you can apply at http://www.topmodelofsunderland.co.uk/
