Speedway success for Sunderland youngster Owen

-

2018.

He started out at Pickering DMC motor club, where he went on to win the club championship for the youth motocross bike class.

Proud dad, Paul Booth said: “Owen has always had a love for motor bikes, cars engines and tools since a very early age.

“Myself and his uncle both raced motocross from the 1980s and his uncle is still very active in riding.

“Owen has shown a great interest in trying to ride and own a motocross bike and was lucky enough that his grandfather and grandmother bought him his first Honda motocross bike.

“Unfortunately, his grandmother Barbara Booth never got to see him getting his motorbike or ride as she sadly passed away before Christmas.”

Owen has certainly done his Gran proud, by starting to ride bigger bikes with a greater engine capacity.

After enjoying a successful 2019 at the Scotland Winter Series, the Booth family were approached by previous promoters of Newcastle Diamond Martin and Tina Phillips.

The duo showed great faith in Owen by loaning him a 125 speedway bike so he could make the transition between motocross and speedway.

This led to Owen being taken under the wing of the junior riders at Newcastle Sapphires and ultimately signed up with the British youth organisation in order to ride in the British youth championship which is open to all junior speedway riders.

On his new son’s new team, Paul said: “Owen has a great love for all at the Newcastle Diamonds as they are really engaging with youth riders, as are the Sapphire manager and all promoters and staff at Newcastle speedway.

“So hopefully, he’ll have a great future in the sport of speedway.

“Newcastle speedway has recently been taking over by Robert Grant, who has a real passion to move the whole of the club forward and to promote both youth and adult teams.”

The home of Newcastle speedway is Brough Park and while the season is currently suspended, the Sapphire’s usually have home matches are on a Sunday night from March and starts at 5.30pm.
