-

Grants of up to £500 have been handed out to support community groups in Hetton le Hole.

Cricket and football clubs, youth groups, senior citizens clubs and a newlyformed community group are among a range of organisations to have been awarded cash to help with their activities.

Among those helped were East Rainton Community Group and Hetton Lyons Country Park.

The money has been presented by Hetton Town Council as part of its yearly financial support.

David Martyn, chairman of East Rainton Community Group said: “We are a new group and the award is vital for helping with set up costs and initial activities. It's great that the Town Council have been able to help.”

Shirley Carr, from Friends of Hetton Lyons Country Park, added: “The grant money received will go towards new IT equipment which is essential to support the running of the group. The Town Council's help with this is much appreciated.”

Coun Kathleen Pearson, Mayor of Hetton Town Council, said: “The Town Council set aside funds each year to assist eligible groups who need financial help and can show how their work will benefit the local community.

“The Town Council is delighted to have been able to support groups throughout the year.”
