L1 chairman reveals his fixture solution
Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has proposed a solution that could see League One football return in June.
Speaking on his new podcast, MacAnthony suggested that football could return in nine weeks time providing that the country have managed to ‘stem the flow’ of COVID-19.
But his plan revolves around testing kits being widely available – with the Posh owner putting forward a plan which would see all players and staff being regularly tested with games played behind closed doors and broadcast to those at home.
“Let's say in nine weeks we've stemmed the flow and there is this 15-minute test,” he said.
“Can we make ensure that players and staff who are going to play behind closed doors are tested, if widespread testing is available.
“Then we can get sports back on, we can play behind closed doors and get our season done.
“Wouldn't it be great to have them on TV for everyone? That's something I want to see the EFL and Premier League encourage if playing in front of crowds isn't an option.”
MacAnthony is also confident that the EFL won’t follow in the footsteps of the several non-league and women’s divisions who declared their season null and void earlier this week.
“I pray that the EFL, the Premier League and the rest of football don't make such a hasty decision.
“I don't think they will. We're working on solutions and I think we'll come up with the right solution and do the right thing for the integrity of our game.”
