New lease of life for fire-damaged shops
Plans to revamp fire-damaged business units have been lodged with council planners.
In 2018, firefighters battled a huge blaze which spread across several properties in Richard Street in Hetton.
As a result, there was extensive damage to shops on the street.
Earlier this month , a planning application was lodged to refurbish five units on the street.
The project aims to restore the ground floor shops and provide refuse and bicycle storage alongside refurbished first floor flats.
A Design and Access statement prepared for the applicant outlines works planned for the buildings.
This includes fixing roof damage, new doors and windows and external roller shutters.
It reads: “The redevelopment will be carried out in accordance with building regulations meeting all thermal insulation standards, soundproofing requirements and disabled requirements.
“Hopefully these works will transform the present building into a modern mixed use property with commercial shop units and self contained one bedroom flats for rental.”
The planning document goes on to say: “We feel this redevelopment will greatly improve the area, generating more affordable retail and domestic units thereby enhancing the area.”
Sunderland City Council is expected to rule on the plans by the end of May, though it may take longer due to the coronavirus restrictions. Councillors will consider the application before voting on the proposals at a committee meeting. Comments can be made by writing to the council before Friday, April 10.
