As part of our #HealthHeroes campaign to celebrate brave staff on the frontline, South Tyneside and Sunderland’s NHS chief has sent a moving message of encouragement.

The chief executive of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS trust, Ken Bremner says he has “never been more proud” of staff dealing with the unprecedented challenge of coronavirus.

In his heartwarming tribute, Mr Brenmer praised staff for the “incredible job” they are doing despite the difficult circumstances and hailed their “amazing determination and professionalism”.

Mr Bremner said staff were working in “uncharted territory” but would continue to be resilient and “respond to the needs of our local communities.”

He said: “I have never been more proud of each and every colleague across the trust and thank them all wholeheartedly for their amazing determination and professionalism despite these very difficult circumstances.

“We are in uncharted territory, but our teams are working around the clock to ensure that our patients get high quality, compassionate care, whether in our hospitals or out in the community.

“We must not underestimate the devastating impact of coronavirus. Sadly, we continue to see many families affected by the virus, the impact of which is greatly felt by us all across the Trust.

“The coming weeks and months will, no doubt, be difficult for the NHS but we will continue to demonstrate our resilience and respond to the needs of our local communities as we have always done.”

He finished by urging people to keep following the Government guidance to stay at home wherever possible and maintain the recommended social distance in order to protect the NHS.

Mr Bremner added: “We will get through this together but many of the people we care for every day have complex, underlying health issues and are, therefore, among those at greatest risk from COVID-19 so it is vitally important that people strictly observe government guidance on social distancing and isolation. This will help protect the NHS and help us save more lives.”
