-

n response to school closures across the UK, National Literacy Trust has launched a free comprehensive online zone for parents seeking ideas and guidance for activities to engage their children at home, while also benefiting their reading, writing and language development.

The charity, which runs Our Stories in partnership with North Yorkshire Coast Opportunity Area to inspire parents to share stories with their children every day, has created Family Zone.

Visit literacyfamilyzone. org.uk – a one-stop shop for families that brings together some of the UK’s most exciting literacy resources and activities in one place.

Drawing on the charity’s expertise and partnerships with teachers, authors, publishers, educational organisations and corporates, local families can access engaging reading and writing activities, book lists, videos, audio books, competitions and reading challenges, curated for early years to early teens.

New activities and resources will be added regularly as the charity develops

Our Stories Manager Liz Dyer said: “There are a brilliant range of activities in the Family Zone for children from birth to age 12, from interactive workshops with amazing authors and illustrators, to activity sheets featuring household favourites such as Hey Duggee and Mr Tumble.”

The Literacy Trust website confirms: “As a response to school closures, we have developed a comprehensive web portal for parents to support you during this time. Over the next days, weeks and months we will be updating this as often as we can with new and useful content for parents.

“Split up by age groups, you will find ideas and guidance for simple activities that will engage your children at home, while also benefiting their reading, writing and language development. You’ll be able to access free reading and writing resources, audio books, videos, competitions and reading challenges. Every resource is available for free, although to access some you may need to create a free account.”
