Former Cats winger had heart set on MLS move
Former Sunderland winger Lewis Morgan has revealed that he snubbed a return to England this season – as he had his heart set on a move to the MLS.
The former Celtic wideman featured 22 times for the Black Cats during a halfseason loan spell last term, scoring twice.
He returned to Parkhead for pre-season but struggled for opportunities, before sealing a move to David Beckhambacked MLS expansion side Inter Miami in January.
And Morgan has now revealed that he had the option to return to the English pyramid during the current campaign – but had his eyes set on a move to Miami.
“I had a few clubs in the Championship (with offers)," Morgan said, speaking to the MLS’ official website.
"But to be honest, once I heard of the interest here and how keen the club were to get me, that kind of made my mind up.”
Morgan featured just twice for his new side before the MLS season was suspended, but he hasn’t been using the free time afforded by the pause in fixtures to watch the second season of ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die’ – in which he featured.
“It was a little weird," said the wideman of the presence of the cameras. The 23-year-old only has positive things to say about his brief spell on Wearside.
“I’ve only got fond memories from being there," Morgan added.
"It's a massive club. When I was down there I was trying to concentrate on the football side of things and we didn’t achieve the goals we wanted to, which obviously wasn’t great. I’m hoping they can get back to where they belong."
