Rubbish dumped at Sunderland beauty spot
Flytippers have been condemned after dumping rubbish at a Sunderland beauty spot.
Echo reader Steve Tobbell spotted this scene at Ryhope Dene while out for this daily excercise during the coronavirus lockdown.
“I’ve been exercising daily along the cliff tops from Grangetown to Seaham,” he said.
“I have lived close by for more than 30 years and until now never knew how beautiful our coastline is.
“Fly-tipping is an absolute disgrace.
“I want to get involved to stop this blur on our local landscape and make entering Sunderland by train more appealing.
“It is recent and is clearly a builder who is not adhering to waste disposal rules.”
The Echo launched its Clean Streets campaign in December 2017, in response to readers’ concerns about the cleanliness of public spaces across Sunderland.
Supported by Sunderland City Council, the campaign calls on the public to take pride in their community, and report any incidents of fly-tipping and littering.
It has been backed by the Campaign to Protect Rural England – the first charity to wage a national anti-litter effort, across the country.
Coun Amy Wilson, the city council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "It's totally unacceptable that anyone should think it's okay to dump their waste in a beauty spot rather than dispose of it responsibly.
“In this particular case the land is private land so we have reported it the landowners for removal.”
