Why mum is so proud over her kids’ kindness...
Two young girls are supporting the NHS by making over 200 ear savers to protect nurses wearing PPE for long periods of time while treating coronavirus patients.
Harriet Adgar, eight, and her sister Isabelle, five, came up with the idea after wanting to find a way to support their auntie, who is a nurse at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.
The sisters, from Washington, wanted to help their aunt Deborah Armstrong, 39, who has been wearing protective masks all day during her shifts as a ward sister and came up with the idea of using a 3D printer to make ear savers for Deborah, her colleagues and other hospitals around the North East.
So far, the sisters have made more than 200 ear savers and sent them out to staff at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, Sunderland Royal Hospital, Newcastle’s RVI and the ASDA Washington pharmacy.
Their mam, Carolyn Adgar, 37, is extremely proud of the kindness her two daughters have shown during these difficult times.
She said: “I'm immensely proud, my girls are so selfless and are always thinking about other people.
“All children have been affected greatly due to all the changes they've had to go through at the moment and yet they are still thinking of others.
“It's extremely important to look after others at all times, but now more than ever.
“Anything we can do to make people's lives a little bit more comfortable is great.
“It's wonderful how everyone is rallying round to try and support others; whether it's putting rainbows in their windows, clapping on a Thursday night or doing a vulnerable person's shopping for them.”
Harriet and Isabella got the idea after being inspired by seeing posts of people helping each other on Facebook, and are over the moon with the response they’ve got from NHS staff across the region.
The ear savers help make staff who are wearing PPE masks for long periods of time more comfortable and stop the masks rubbing on their ears and making them sore.
Carolyn added: “Hopefully it'll make their jobs a little bit more comfortable as they work such long, hard hours saving lives.”
