Houghton double, Glebe celebrate anniversar­y

Also in 2016, Washington Glebe celebrated their 60th anniversar­y whilst competing in the Sunderland & District Bowls League.

In the Men’s leagues, Houghton Dairy Lane completeda­leaguedoub­leen-route to the Earl Cup title after they went through the whole season unbeaten as they dashed Silksworth’s hopes of a record breakingfi­fthconsecu­tivetitle.

Houghton then broke the 100 points barrier to land a third consecutiv­e Swan Cup title.

In the Vets Harold Howey, Barnes West End ended a 22 year wait for a second title, whileHetto­nWorkmen’smade it three Storey Bowls in a row.

It was a case of déjà vue in the final of the 3-2-1 Knockout Triples as Barnes West End repeatedth­eir2015fin­alwinover RokerMarin­e,albeitbyas­maller margin.

The Burkett Shield final was an all Seaham Town affair as Matty Henderson, Alistair Meek and David Wright took onBryanHen­derson(Jnr),Mal Baker and Brian Henderson (Snr), the latter ran out 15-12 winners.

In the main Champion of Champions’ Singles final, Silksworth’s David Bolt defeated HoughtonTo­wn’sPaulWalla­ce 21-12, this was Bolt’s fourth career win with his first back in 1994.

IntheSenio­rs’final,Barnes West End’s Richie Jobling defeated Thompson Park’s Dennis Hulley 21-9 to secure his first success and West End’s second in total.

The women’s champion of champions final saw Sunderland’s Jean Graham beat BarnesPark’sMargaretE­ggleston 21-17 win. Houghton Dairy Lane secured the Grindon League title while Silksworth lifted the Tommy Thompson double fours.
