Fab four stand firm to defend league titles

The 1990 outdoor season was unique as all four Sunderland & District league titles were successful­ly defended.

Hylton Colliery retained the Earl Cup, Herrington Workmen’s notched their 24th consecutiv­e Swan Cup, Seaham Town retained the Harold Howey and Hylton Colliery defended the Storey Bowl.

Ryhope’s John Godfrey and the late Albert Amos repeated their 1987 win the Silver Jacks, while the Thorney Close trio of Gordon Newton, Alan Begg and Bobby Alexander won the Burkett Shield,.

The Champion of Champions title went to Houghton Dairy Lane’s Bill Delaney.

In the Grindon League, Ryhope won their first league title and likewise Silksworth lifted the Tommy Thompson Double Fours, also for the first time.

Usworth’s George Hackett and Colin Clark won the Powley Pairs and Washington’s Steve Krimpen, Bobby Adamson and the late Eric Williamson land the Jim Brown Triples.

The Hood Fours went to Wearmouth’s Tommy Wilson, while the popular two day competitio­n was won by the Laing’s quartet of Billy Roberts, Dick Forster, Fred Knubley and George Richardson.

Following the government’s announceme­nt that facilities associated with outdoor sports and physical activities, including lawn bowls, may now reopen, Bowls England have issued a guidance document for clubs to use as a reference point.
