Two held after £80k of cocaine discovered

Two suspected drug dealers have been arrested after being busted in possession of more than two kilos of cocaine – estimated to be worth £80,000.

Northumbria Police, in support of a National Crime Agency investigation, had been carrying out traffic patrols in South Tyneside last Tuesday, in a bid to trace a suspicious BMW believed to be transporting drugs.

Shortly before 8pm, the National Police Air Service helicopter was able to track the BMW to the Boldon area.

Traffic officers swooped in and following a short pursuit brought the vehicle to a stop near Testos roundabout on the A19. A search of the car led to the recovery of two kilos of cocaine – with an estimated street value of around £80,000.

Two men, aged 34 and 35, were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of illegal drugs. They have since been released under investigation.

Chief Inspector Sam Rennison from the Force’s Operations Department has praised the motor patrol officers who made the arrest. She said: “We are serious about tackling serious and organised crime and will continue to work alongside our partners to disrupt those involved and bring them to justice, under the banner of Operation Sentinel.”

NCA Operations Manager, Martin Clarke, added: “This is an excellent example of how we work with partners in policing to take illicit drugs off the streets and to keep the public safe. We will continue to pursue those determined to continue their criminal activities no matter what.”
