Man in hospital after house fire

Emergency services rushed to the fire, which is believed to have started in the kitchen, at around 10.10pm on Thursday.

Neighbours have reported hearing an ‘explosion’ around this time.

A police cordon remained in place around the property on Friday morning, with a lone police van parked outside.

A Durham Constabula­ry spokesman said on Friday: “The investigat­ion is in its initial stages and at this point it is too early to speculate on the cause of the fire.

“Atapproxim­ately10.15pm last night we were alerted by our colleagues at County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service to reports of a fire at a residentia­l property in Rosedale Terrace, Horden.

“Officers attended the scene and discovered a man in his mid-20s suffering from serious facial burns who was taken to hospital.

“He is currently in a serious but stable condition in the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle.

“A joint police and fire service investigat­ion has been launched to determine the cause of the fire, which caused significan­t damage to the property.

“Last night a woman in her 30s was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the production of cannabis.

“She has been questioned by detectives in Peterlee CID and remains in custody.”

Three fire engines, a double-crewed ambulance, specialist paramedic and a hazardous area response team were also called to the incident.

The fire was extinguish­ed at around 10.40pm.
