Face masks go on sale at Metro stations

Twelve stations on the Tyne and Wear Metro network now have face masks available in vending machines.

The move comes following the Government’s announcement last month that face coverings are mandatory on all public transport. The change came into effect from Monday, June 15.

Metro owner and manager Nexus made the face masks available in a bid to assist passengers on the go – but people are still advised to use their own home-made face coverings, where possible.

The vending machines – which usually just sell snacks and drinks – now also include the five-packs of disposal masks, which cost £3.70.

Nexus does not make any profit from selling the masks.

Customer Services Director, Huw Lewis, said: “This is to help customers who need access to a face covering on the go and who don’t have one with them.

“The vending machines are stocked up with supplies of the surgical face masks that are sold in packs of five. These are being sold at cost price, so Metro isn’t profiting from this.

“The face coverings rule is vital in the national fight against COVID-19. People need to wear them on all modes of public transport.

“The uptake has been good since the rule was introduced on June 15, with around 95% of passengers wearing them when making a journey.”

Vending machines containing the masks are in place at the following stations: South Gosforth, Gateshead Interchange, Four Lane Ends, Heworth, Jesmond, Monkseaton, Monument, North Shields, Regent Centre, Tynemouth, West Jesmond, Whitley Bay.
