Jackett reveals future plans after Pompey suffer play-off heartbreak

Kenny Jackett has failed to reach the Championship with Portsmouth at the third attempt, but insists he is determined to see the job through on the south coast.

Jackett insists his desire to take Pompey up remains as strong as ever, though the club is facing a summer overhaul of players. Jackett told the Portsmouth News: “It is there, very much so [desire for the job]. I do feel there is a good squad to build it on.

“We’ve had a very consistent time and that’s what we’ve tried to work for. We’ve fallen now twice at the play-off hurdles with not much in the games and not getting the rub of the green.

“I do feel there’s been consistency and we do aspire to be better. We have to keep trying tobuild.Thesupporterswillbe disappointed. The record as a clubshowswe’venotwonasingle play-off game.

“We’vehadtwo1-1drawsreallyandlostthesecondone5-4

on penalties. We have to break that down if we can and keep going.”

On the plans for this summer ahead of the 2020-21 campaign Jackett added: “We have a nucleus under contract and they’re coming back no matter what division we’re in.

“I do think we have a nucleus of a good. There’ll be changes but won’t be wholesale changes needed.”

League One rivals Sunderlandarealsofacingabusysummer with boss Phil Parkinson aiming to bring in between seven and eight new signings ahead of the new season.

There is no clarity yet on when that may be however, with clubs waiting for EFL guidance.

*Wigan Athletic administrator Gerald Krasner has said the club have appealed against their12-pointdeductionforgoing into administration.

The Football League said the punishment would apply this season if Wigan avoided finishing in the bottom three.

"The only grounds we have for this is 'force majeure'. My reading of it is, that applied to anything outside what we could have expected," said Krasner.

"This situation was totally unexpected, so we believe this case applies."
