Three new virus cases confirmed

Three people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Sunderland as the city’s hospital goes almost one month with no coronaviru­s-related deaths.

Figures released by Public Health England ontoday, Sunday, showed three new case of COVID-19 have been reported in Sunderland.

The total number of cases in the city stands at 1,776.

Other statistics, released by NHS England, show no rise in the number of deaths at the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Sunderland Royal as well as South Tyneside District Hospital.

The total number of deaths remains at 325, with the last death reported on Sunday, June 21 – almost one month ago

The latest figures also show no rise across the North East, with its total deaths standing at 1,424.

The last death to be recorded at a North East NHS Trust was in County Durham on Wednesday, July 8.

Nationally, a further eight people who tested positive for coronaviru­s have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 29,181.

Patients were aged between 61 and 91 years old.

All patients had known underlying health conditions.

Across the region, 21 more cases were confirmed, including six in County Durham, three in both Northumber­land and Newcastle, two in Redcar and Cleveland and one in both Middlesbro­ugh and Hartlepool.

They brought the total of confirmed cases of coronaviru­s in the North East, 15,227.
