Coastguard warning over misuse of flares

The coastguard has issued a warning to people misusing distress flares after a sighting sparked an emergency response.

Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and Sunderland RNLI Atlantic lifeboat were called into action following reports that a distress flare had been set off in Seaburn at about 11.50pm on Friday.

In response to the emergency signal, both coastguard and lifeboat rescue teams carried out an extensive search of the area but found not race of any vessel in difficulty.

A Pan Pan broadcast – typically used by those aboard a vessel to declare that they need assistance for an urgent situation – was also issued but received no response.

Coastguards then spoke to an angler on Roker Pier who confirmed seeing a red flare inland around the reported time of the call out.

Now the coastguard has issued a reminded to the public that red pyrotechnics are only to be used by those in distress situations.

A message shared on the Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team Facebook page said: "Members of the public are reminded that red pyrotechnics are only for use in distress situations and that their use in any other circumstances is likely to be illegal.

“In all coastal emergencies dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”

Sunderland and Seaham Coastguard Rescue Teams are looking for new volunteers to train as coastguard rescue officers.
