Two men arrested after police give chase

-

The men, aged 24 and 25, were caught by officers on Thursday, July 16, after one of them got tangled in barbed wire while running through allotments in Pennywell, Sunderland.

It followed after a police patrol spotted the occupants of a white BMW acting suspiciously as it drove along Fordfield Road.

Officers pursed the vehicle, which was later ascertained to have been stolen from Ridley Terrace in Hendon, and it was soon found abandoned in the Petersham Road area of Pennywell.

Police swarmed the area in an effort to locate the suspects and two men were spotted running through nearby allotments.

Both were swiftly arrested after one got caught in barbed wire while trying to evade police.

Detective Sergeant John Baines, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a case of good old-fashioned policing after officers spotted something that didn’t seem right and followed their instinct.

“After spotting the BMW which was driving at speed and appeared suspicious, cops proceeded to pursue the car and soon found the occupants had made off on foot.

“That prompted some fantastic teamwork as two suspects were located and detained in a nearby allotment – one of which had come into some trouble and got tangled in barbed wire in his haste to evade police.

“Both men spent the night in a police cell, and one of the suspects is due to appear in court charged with a string of driving offences.

“We will continue to investigate the theft of the motor vehicle and ensure anybody found responsible is dealt with robustly.”
