More than a month with no virus deaths

Sunderland has gone more than a month without reporting a new coronaviru­srelated death – but the North East death toll has risen for the first time in two weeks.

NHS England figures yesterday shownonewv­irusrelate­d deaths in the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

The last virus-related fatality in the trust was recorded on Sunday, June 21, of a patient who had died two days earlier.

The total number of deaths in the trust remains at 325.

One new virus-related deaths has been recorded at a North East hospital yesterday. One person who tested positive for the virus passed away in the South Tees trust, bringing the region’s death toll to 1,425.

The last death to be recorded at a North East NHS Trust before today was in

County Durham on Wednesday, July 8.

Nationally, a further ten people who tested positive for the coronaviru­s (COVID-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 29,212. Patients were aged between 50 and 97-years-old and all had known underlying health conditions.

The latest figures released by Public Health England yesterday, Tuesday, July 21, show not a single new case of Covid-19 was reported in South Tyneside.

Thetotalnu­mberofcase­s in the borough stands at 949.

Across the region, five more cases were confirmed, including two in Newcastle. They brought the total of confirmed cases of coronaviru­s in the North East to 15,237.
