Man arrested after suspected stabbing in fight

A 31-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm after a man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to Burns Avenue South, in Houghton, after a man suffered serious injuries “consistent with a stabbing” when a fight broke out between two men.

Northumbri­a Police has now confirmed a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. He has since been released on police bail as an investigat­ion into the incident continues.

A 26-year-old man was taken to hospital with “serious but non-life-threatenin­g injuries” following the incident.

A force spokesman said: “Shortly after 1.10pm on Tuesday, July 21, police received a report of a fight on Burns Avenue South, Houghton. It was reported two men, believed to be known to each other, were fighting inside an address resulting in one of the men sustaining serious but nonlife-threatenin­g injuries consistent with a stabbing.

“Enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the incident.”

Witnesses reported seeing the Great North Air Ambulance land nearby as paramedics treated the injured man.

A spokeswoma­n for the air ambulance said: “Our team was activated at 1.26pm to an area near Houghton to reports of a stabbing.

"Our team arrived on scene at 1.39pm with a paramedic and doctor team to assist and treat a patient.

“The patient was taken to hospital by road.”
