Drivers warned over roadworks

Closure of Houghton Cut into Sunderland­anddiversi­onsvia Newbottle.

Council chiefs say works have been timetabled to minimise disruption as part of the council's programme for nearly 250 road and footpath projectsov­erthefinan­cialyear 20/21.

Councillor Michael Mordey, deputy leader of Sunderland City Council and cabinet memberforE­nvironment­and Transport, said: "Maintainin­g andinvesti­nginourcit­y'shighways has always been and remainsone­ofthisCity­Council's main priorities.

"Our highways and transport networks are integral to the smooth flows of people, goodsandse­rvicesacro­ssSunderla­nd and we have a robust programme of annual works and maintenanc­e.

"In delivering this year’s extensive resurfacin­g programme, a significan­t amount of the work was programmed for over the spring and summer and this work continues in August.

"We always plan to minimise any disruption and, on behalfofco­uncilstaff­andcontrac­tors, thank you for your patience as we complete these necessary works."
